CCOO WINS €2.7 MILLION FOR EX-EMPLOYEES OF OPENING
Remember OPENING 2002!?
The dramatic bankruptcy of the language school left students and teachers out on the street and out of pocket. Hundreds of employees were owed months of wages and received no redundancy payment. The story was headline news for weeks and its effects could be felt across the English language teaching sector.
Forward to February 2007
After years of battle in the courts the CCOO Legal Department in Barcelona has won full compensation for 400 ex-employees of Opening. Each employee now receives all the unpaid wages due to them plus their redundancy pay. The total payout amounts to €2.7 million, an average of 6,750€ per ex-employee!
This is excellent news for all those workers who chose CCOO to represent them, and helps reduce the possibilities that a similar event could occur again in the future.
Unfortunately, in the Opening case at the time hundreds of employees chose to drop their claims for compensation believing it impossible that they would receive anything. Others chose not be represented by CCOO, with varying success, some of them still left with nothing.
CCOO works every day to defend your rights, from the smallest query to full legal backup in the courts. Make sure you and your colleagues are protected!
